Why oil-rich Nigeria has trouble exploiting its wealth | DW News
Nigeria and its oil wealth is a complicated story. The west African nation is the continent's biggest oil producer, and it ranks eleventh in global terms. But it has a hard time attracting foreign investment - prompting President Muhammadu Buhari to free Nigeria's state-owned oil firm from state control earlier this month.Oil accounts for 90 percent of Nigeria's exports but it's had problems exploiting that wealth of crude - producing well under its daily OPEC quota. It's estimated that about a tenth of the oil pumped ends up stolen: In the first quarter of 2022 that was crude worth a billion dollars. Nigeria begins modernising oil refineries
For much of the last 30 years, Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer, has imported refined petroleum products because its old refineries are unable to produce enough to satisfy local demand.
Added to that has been decades of mismanagement and corruption, which left its four plants operating well below capacity and, and times, shut down for months.
Now the government has begun a process of modernising three of its refineries.

In June, an explosion at one of Nigeria's major pipelines spilled 6,000 barrels of crude into the creeks and swamps around Bodo village, killing several people. In this special investigation, John Vidal visits the region to find out why oil and the delta's residents do not mix. They speak to traders and visit the communities most affected, and ask what can be done to develop the area to the benefit of the people living there.
